Jamaica 2012 Print E-mail

The Jamaica 2012 Summer Project will be the fifth project in Jamaica. Volunteers from Canada and Jamaica run a two week program which is offered free to the local participants aged 12 to 18 years. Since the Pilot Project in 2007, TAP Jamaica has involved more than 200 participants from across the island in its programs.

Dates:

July 11 - 29, 2012

Program Location:

College of Agriculture, Science and Education (C.A.S.E.) located outside of Port Antonio, Jamaica (http://case.edu.jm/html/)

Volunteer Roles:

Program Coordinator, Facilitator-in-Training Team Coordinator, Support Staff Coordinator, Arts Facilitator, Support Staff (includes roles such as Sports Leader, Kitchen, Backup Arts Facilitator, Lifeguard, Driver), Nurse

Cost:

$1,000 CAD*

  • Included: Food, accommodations, travel to and from airport, training in Canada and orientation upon arrival, expenses for all Jamaica participants to attend the program

  • Not Included: Flight, travel and health insurance, passport costs, medical needs, extra-curricular activites, entertainment, snacks (we recommend to bring $50 per week for souvenirs, Day Off activities, personal emergencies)

The balance of your cost must be paid 8 weeks prior to the start date of the Project.

Arts Workshops:

Theatre, Creative Writing, Visual Art, Dance/Movement, Music, Film/Photography, Culinary (and much more!)

Typical Day:

The day begins with a drum roll at 7am followed by a morning activity. After breakfast, participants split into their respective Arts Workshops (one in the morning and the other in the afternoon). After Workshops are completed, it is time for Team Challenge! Team Challenge includes a variety of intramural sports, games, and fun activities. The evening is filled with either a leadership or specialty workshop lead by local artists, arts facilitators or the Facilitator-in-Training Team. After a full day of instruction and fun, participants retire to their dorms for a good night's rest.

At the end of the two week program, all of the workshop groups prepare a final performance/piece for the Showcase! It is beautiful to see the participants highlighting what they have learned and created to their peers.

I have learned so much about myself as a teacher, as a Canadian, as a student, and as a human being from this experience, and I know I will take this learning with me throughout my lifetime.

- Lescia, Theatre Facilitator, 22
